Eastbourne need a perfect run-in – and a favour from elsewhere – if they are to grab the National League title after late drama tonight.

Eagles lost 46-43 in a thriller away to leaders Birmingham Brummies, who extend their advantage in top spot to 13 points.

Eagles led at Perry Barr at various stages, including going into heat 15. But they admit this result might have been the decisive blow in their quest for the title.

Adam Ellis raced away to win heat 15 for the hosts and unbeaten Zach Wajtknecht completed the 5-1 by passing Bradley Wilson-Dean, who had mechanical problems.

Team manager Glenn Martin said: “We’re not dead yet but it looks a nigh-on impossible task."

Birmingham: Wajtknecht 14+1 (5), Ellis 11 (5), Perry 9+1 (4), Chapman 6+2 (4), Smith 3 (4), Govier 2+1 (4), Kirby 1 (4).

Eagles: Spiller 10+2 (7), Hopwood 8+1 (4), Owen 8+1 (6), Wilson-Dean 8 (5), Andrews 5+1 (5), Dugard 4+1 (3), Wood r/r.
