Faye Baker would love to see her goalkeeping coach walk down the aisle with a Bruno-esque beard.

It would mean Albion Women had still yet to concede a goal this season.

Baker kept a third clean sheet out of three in the 4-0 League Cup win at home to Gillingham on Sunday.

She was the first to admit she had little to do on this occasion as goals from Kirsty Barton, Kim Stenning, Kate Natkiel and Charlotte Gurr saw the Seagulls through.

But the result still stretched the proud defensive record.

Baker told The Argus: “My goalkeeping coach Julian Kilner has told me he won’t shave until we concede a goal.

“He gets married in a couple of months so I think he is starting to get a bit nervous!

“We are happy with our start. We couldn’t have hoped for much more. We are unbeaten, haven’t conceded a goal and have had a few different goalscorers.

“I thought it was a good performance on Sunday. We weren’t at our best. We didn’t keep the ball as well as we maybe should do. But we dominated throughout.

“The week before, when we drew 0-0 at Charlton, was more even in terms of chances but I thought we had the better of them.”

Baker made a fingertip save at Charlton to divert a shot on to the woodwork, which was not noticed by many observers.

“I got a touch,” she said. “It was the sort of save where, if the ball goes behind, you say ‘I never touched it!’.

“But if it comes back off the bar you want to make sure everyone knows you touched it!”

Although there has been a chance to enjoy a joke, a shadow has been cast of Albion’s recent activity by tragic events near their training ground at the Shoreham Airshow.

Fellow goalkeeper Matt Grimstone, who worked on the club’s groundstaff, was among those killed.

Baker has had his initials printed on her gloves in a move which echoes David Stockdale’s tribute to those who died. Stockdale is Baker’s glove sponsor and supplies her with specialist kit via his company.

Gillingham paid their respects when they visited Lancing, offering a floral tribute which was added to those at Shoreham.

Baker said: “We put our tribute down as the women’s team, which was an emotional and sad occasion.

“It was really nice gesture for Gillingham to bring their own tribute and I went with another player to put it next to ours.”

Albion return to league action on Sunday at home to QPR, when there will be no room for error.

Rangers are not expected to be among the top title contenders but Baker said: “We can’t afford to slip up because last season it cost us the league. The smallest margins make a massive difference, as we discovered last season when we finished second.”
