Chris Hughton praised an “outstanding” performance by goalscorer Dale Stephens today.

But he admitted Albion should have won against Cardiff.

Stephens scored his third goal in four matches as the Seagulls were held 1-1 at the Amex.

Boss Hughton said: “I thought he was outstanding – box to box, great energy levels and another good goal for him.

“I’m really pleased for Dale. He had a tough time last season with the injury and took a little while to get back.

“But he is certainly at the top of his game at this moment.”

Hughton was also pleased with Lewis Dunk’s defensive performance after being brought back to help combat big Kenwyne Jones.

And he was impressed by Solly March, who was switched to the left wing.

Albion came from behind after Joe Mason scored early.

Hughton said: “We showed great character. I’m not looking at too many Cardiff chances.

“I think they worked their chance very well.

“We certainly got a response but we have got to turn that possession and dominance into goalscoring opportunities and ultimately goals.

“We weren’t able to do that.

“First and foremost you want to be playing at a level which allows you to have opportunities.

“We are certainly doing that at the moment.

“Goals at the end of it gives us everything.”
