LUKE WRIGHT has been tipped to lead Sussex in the same manner as the club’s most successful ever captain Chris Adams.

Wright was appointed skipper at Hove yesterday following Ed Joyce’s decision to step down in the wake of relegation to division two of the Championship.

Sussex were at a similarly low ebb when Adams began his ten-year reign in 1998 before going on to dominate English cricket, winning three Championship titles and numerous one-day trophies.

Coach Mark Robinson admits Wright was the obvious choice to take over from Joyce and hopes the former England international can have a similar impact to Adams.

Robinson said: “It was a straightforward decision really. There were other candidates like Chris Nash while we could have gone external but Luke really impressed as Twenty20 captain last season.

“There are many different types of captain. Ed and Mike Yardy were quite similar in the way they did things while Luke is more like Chris Adams was.

“Ed is a deep thinker while Mike wore his heart on his sleeve but Luke has got similar characteristics to Chris in that he is a strong leader in the dressing room.

“Although there are similarities Luke is also his own man. He knows what he wants and how he intends to achieve it so we think he is the ideal man to take us forward.”

Robinson admits Nash will feel disappointed after being overlooked despite serving as vice-captain for the last three seasons.

Sussex are expected to name Wright’s vice-captain in the next few days.

“Chris has been a great vice-captain and his role over the last three years can’t be under-estimated,” added Robinson.

“In many ways (appointing Wright) shouldn’t be a reflection on Chris but it was just a case of timing.

“The time is right for Luke while it would be good for Chris to have a selfish winter so he can get back to scoring the volume of runs we need from him without the burden of captaincy.”
