Chris Hughton admits Albion might need to show patience with one of their headline-grabbing summer signings.

But he has backed former Feyenoord flyer Elvis Manu to adapt to the rigours of the Championship.

Manu has come off the bench twice for the Seagulls and not looked totally at home amid the hurly-burly of England’s second tier.

The former Holland under-21 international did not break into the starting XI when potential opportunity arose in the absence of Tomer Hemed, Jamie Murphy and Kazenga LuaLua at different times during the last two games.

But Hughton is convinced the 22-year-old has a big role to play over the coming months.

The Albion boss told The Argus: “Elvis has come from a division that plays a little bit of a different way.

“He came from a good team in Holland but the Dutch league can be very tactical and he is only young. I think he is adapting to the intensity of what the Championship is.

“He can play off the front or he can play in a wide area but I think it’s just a question of him being able to adapt.”

In The Argus today, Hughton and first team coach Nathan Jones highlight the impressive off-pitch set-up which helps Albion’s signings from abroad settle in.

Hughton added: “It can take longer for some to adapt than others but Elvis is a young lad and a willing lad and I would expect him to do that.”

The Seagulls manager is delighted by the progress made in training by another summer signing yet to make a first team impact.

Connor Goldson, the highly regarded former Shrewsbury centre-back, is still awaiting his debut although injury to Uwe Huenemeier allowed him a place on the bench away to his hometown club Wolves.

Hughton said: “Connor has settled in very well.

“This is a lad you can tell has played games.

“He is a very good trainer. The balance is, of course, he has not played as regularly as he has been used to.

“But he has gone up a level and has been good to have around.

“He is a good lad and a good player.”
