Connor Goldson insists he is ready to play in the Championship.

But the stylish former Shrewsbury Town centre-back is prepared to keep waiting and learning in the wings if he has to as Albion fly high.

Goldson has yet to make his debut for the Seagulls, three months since arriving from the League One outfit in a deal believed to be worth about £800,000.

The 22-year-old has impressed boss Chris Hughton in training and says he understands why he has not been pitched into league action yet.

But he is convinced he will live up to his billing as “Championship-ready”, given to him by sources in the West Midlands, when the chance comes.

The Wolverhampton-born defender told The Argus: “I’ve watched a lot of games now and I’m not saying I’m better than our centre-halves, because they are playing really well, but I see a lot of centre-backs in this league who I feel I’m easily as good as.

“I’ve played a lot of teams in the Championship and I’ve always been as good as them.

“I feel like I’m ready and I just need to bide my time, keep working hard, keep improving and hopefully, when it comes, I’ll take my chance.”

Goldson accepts he made a long-term commitment when he signed a four-year deal in August.

But he added: “I’ve played a lot of football in the last two years.

“I don’t want to be waiting years for my opportunity when I’m 25 or 26 because I love playing games on a Saturday.

“But I understand the team is winning games and that is not going to change at the moment.”

Goldson played for Albion’s under-21s against Norwich on Thursday and is keen to get whatever playing time he can.

He said: “Obviously I haven’t played any minutes yet but the team are flying so there’s nothing I can do about that.

“Long may they keep flying because we are near the top of the league and everybody’s happy about the place.”

Meanwhile Christian Walton’s imminent loan move to Plymouth could be confirmed today.
