Bobby Zamora hit a close-range winner as Albion went back to the top of the Championship.
The striker pounced in the second minute of the second half to secure a 2-1 success at home to battling Birmingham City.
Man-of-the-match Solly March fired the Seagulls into a 17th-minute lead and also had the shot, parried by Tomasz Kuszczak, from which Zamora hit the winner.
Jon Toral headed Blues’ first-half levelller after David Stockdale parried Jacques Maghoma’s shot.
Loan signing James Wilson went on as sub in the second half and almost headed off a nervous finale when he hit the post after being sent clear by Beram Kayal.
Instead, fans in a season’s best crowd of 27,242 were left with another nail-biter.
But Stockdale ensured the points stayed at home as he got down sharply to his right to pull off a super save from David Davis in added time.
The win might have come at a heavy cost. Left-back Liam Rosenior, pictured above, was stretchered off in the first half.
