Goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan is biding his time over signing a new contract at Crawley Town.

Flahavan’s short-term contract expired after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Notts County but has yet to put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season which he was offered last week.

Boss Mark Yates was due to hold further talks with the 37-year-old former Bournemouth keeper yesterday but Flahavan – who has made 14 appearances since arriving in October – appears keen to assess his options.

Reds have 20-year-old Callum Preston as back-up for the trip to League Two strugglers Yeovil Town on Saturday if Flahavan continues to stall while Yates could consider dipping into the loan market again having brought Freddie Woodman to the Checkatrade.com Stadium from Newcastle earlier in the season.

Midfielder Ross Jenkins insists he had no doubts about signing a new deal to keep him at Crawley until the summer last Friday.

The former Watford man has started only six games since joining Reds in September but is targeting a run in the team while Jimmy Smith is sidelined by a broken bone in a foot.

Jenkins, 25, said: “My heart always wanted to stay here so I was just waiting for something to be drawn up. I was always willing to sign and I am just glad it is sorted so I can look forward to the rest of the season now.

“Jimmy getting injured was unfortunate but it has given me a chance. I think I have done well in the last two games I’ve played so it is about building on those performances now and staying in the team.”

Jenkins is confident Reds can bounce back from the setback against County when they travel to second-bottom Yeovil Town this weekend looking to end a run of four straight away defeats.

He added: “We need to go there with a positive frame of mind and not think about our (away) form. If we do that I’m sure we’ll get a result and turn our away form around.”
