Chris Jordan can be England’s secret weapon as they bid for World Twenty20 glory.

That is the view of Sussex coach Mark Davis after Jordan was named in a 15-man squad for the tournament in India next month.

Jordan got the nod ahead of Chris Woakes for one of the all-rounder’s spots but there was no place for Sussex skipper Luke Wright despite his excellent form with the bat in both the Big Bash and Pakistan Super League this winter.

Although the squad was only announced yesterday Davis believes Jordan had been assured of his place on the plane since his brilliant Super Over – in which he conceded just three runs – secured victory in the final Twenty20 international against Pakistan in November.

And the Sussex coach has backed the 27-year-old to come up trumps again for his country when the pressure is on in India as England attempt to lift the trophy for only the second time.

Davis said: “You can never take anything for granted but I think CJ did his credibility a lot of good with that Super Over. He showed he could deliver his yorker under intense pressure and I think that is the job England will want him to do in India.

“In India you need to take the pitches out of the equation if you are a seamer so the yorker is the golden ball if you like. CJ has worked incredibly hard to improve his yorker over the last year and I expect that is something England has asked him to focus on because they see him as their go-to guy.

“He can also get the ball reverse swinging to tail it in to the right-handers which will be important out there so I think Chris can be a valuable member of the team. On top of that I don’t think England have seen the best of him with the bat yet and he is one of the finest fielders in the world.

“It’s a great opportunity for Chris to really show what he can do. He has the potential to be a very dangerous player in Twenty20 cricket and hopefully he will be able to show that on the biggest stage.”

Wright had been touted for a surprise recall to the England squad almost two years after his last appearance for his country by Kevin Pietersen who has witnessed his form for Melbourne Stars and Quetta Gladiators at close quarters this winter.

Davis believes the Sussex skipper was unlucky to miss out on what would have been a fifth World Twenty20 appearance but insists the 30-year-old’s international career is not necessarily over.

“Luke’s form over the last couple of months has been exceptional and there is no doubt in my mind he is one of the best players in the world at the moment,” said Davis.

“He has been phenomenal for the last few years and not just in Twenty20 cricket but England have obviously got an idea of the kind of team they want and Luke doesn’t feature in that at the moment. I’m sure if he got another chance with England he would do well but he is still a young man and the situation could change.”

Jordan’s selection means there will be two Sussex players competing at the World Twenty20 after batsman Matt Machan was named in the Scotland squad earlier this week.

England squad: Morgan (Middlesex), Ali (Worcestershire), Billings (Kent), Buttler (Lancashire), Dawson (Hampshire), Finn (Middlesex), Hales (Nottinghamshire), Jordan (Sussex), Rashid (Yorkshire), Root (Yorkshire), Roy (Surrey), Stokes (Durham), Topley (Hampshire), Vince (Hampshire), Willey (Yorkshire).
