Too much has been written on the subject of helmets this week so I’ll keep it short.
Helmets are there to keep players safe so if there is a one available that does the job better than another then surely it’s a no-brainer to use it.
This issue has been blown out of all proportion because England captain Alastair Cook made it clear he preferred his old helmet to the new one.
My message to him is to stop moaning and get on with it.
I remember my first ever helmet was a green Albion one with perspex sides and no front grille at all.
I got whacked on the head a couple of times and all it did was soften the blow a little.
I’d still have a lump and a headache because there was so little padding.
Thankfully technology has come a long way since then. Helmets are continually being modified and it would have been crazy of me to stick with my original piece of headgear throughout my career just because I was used to it.
Cook will adapt too. Hopefully his century in the second innings at Hove this week will convince him it’s not such a big deal after all and we can all move on.
