Inigo Calderon is set for a shock return to the squad for Albion’s biggest promotion game in 25 years.

He is in line for a spot on the bench at Middlesbrough tomorrow.

The long-serving defender from the Basque Country could make his 233rd appearance for the club in the crunch clash at the Riverside Stadium.

Albion, needing to win to reach the Premier League, are the closest they have been to a return to the top flight since 1991, when they were beaten in the final of the play-offs by Notts County.

Calderon’s anticipated recall is a knock-on consequence of Lewis Dunk’s two-match ban for his second red card of the season against Derby on Monday.

Skipper Gordon Greer will take Dunk’s place in the centre of defence, his first appearance for the Seagulls since January.

Albion’s other centre-half, Uwe Huenemeier, has been out with groin damage since the 3-0 defeat by Middlesbrough at the Amex in December.

Boss Chris Hughton needs extra defensive cover on the bench, with Greer promoted to the starting eleven. The versatile Calderon is the obvious option.

The 34-year-old has played at right-back, left-back, in midfield and in a couple of emergencies at centre-half during his seven seasons at the club.

He has not featured since February, when he replaced the injured Bruno in the second half of the 4-0 romp at Bristol City.

Albion will not want any mishaps to Greer or Goldson, who required treatment on his back against Derby.

They are also without Dunk for the potential play-off semi-final first leg at Sheffield Wednesday on May 13.
