Chris Hughton signed a long-term Albion deal – and eyed another shot at Championship success.

The Seagulls boss has shrugged off promotion disappointment and set his sights firmly on next season after agreeing a new four-year contract.

Hughton’s new deal runs until June 2020 and has been described as “thoroughly deserved” by Tony Bloom.

The Albion chairman moved quickly after his club’s high-flying season ended in play-off defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Hughton, who had two years left to run on his previous deal, said: “One thing you learn in the game – and one thing you have to learn – is to be able to bounce back, to cope with the highs and the lows.

“We have had a lot of highs this season and Monday was, of course, the lowest point. But a couple of days after that you are thinking already about next season.

“Hence the new contract. It is us thinking about the future as opposed to what happened on Monday and the season.

“I have to focus on next season and making sure we can be competitive.”

Hughton is confident of strong backing from Bloom as he looks to further improve an Albion squad who went within two goals of automatic promotion.

He added: “I’ve had wonderful backing since I came here. I think it is quite obvious what the chairman has put into this club by the recruitment we have had so far.

“The chairman is very much a Brighton supporter. This is his club. He will support and help in any way he can.”

Bloom, who appointed Hughton on New Year’s Eve, 2014, said: “There is no doubt he is one of the best and most skilful managers in the country.

“We are delighted to be going into next season with Chris at the helm and leading our club as we aim to go one step further and realise our ultimate aim of reaching the Premier League.”
