LUKE WRIGHT’S comeback from injury has been delayed again.

The Sussex skipper was scheduled to feature for the first time this season in tomorrow’s Championship clash with Derbyshire at Hove.

But the former England international has still not fully recovered from a slipped disc in his back with head coach Mark Davis admitting it would be too big a risk to throw him straight into a four-day game.

Wicketkeeper Ben Brown will once again stand in as captain with Wright’ return put back until the NatWest T20 Blast clash with Somerset at Hove on June 1.

Davis said: “Luke won’t play. He has been doing his rehab and is progressing well but we don’t want to risk him coming back when he’s not 100% ready and aggravating the problem.

“His wrist is fine now (he had an operation to repair a burst vein) so it is just his back now. From my own experience of having back problems I know it is not a straightforward injury so you have to be patient.

“Obviously we would love to have Luke available but going straight into a four-day game would be a gamble not only from a fitness point of view but from a cricketing performance perspective as he’s not hit a ball in anger for four months.

“He’ll start to practise in the nets during the Derbyshire game and if all goes well he will be ready to play against Somerset next week.”

If Wright does return against Somerset it will set up a star-studded night at Hove with Chris Jordan also due to make his first appearance of the season for Sussex after returning from the IPL. New overseas signing David Wiese will also make his debut while Somerset are expected to feature West Indies big-hitter Chris Gayle.
