Crawley have sold prize asset Gwion Edwards to Peterborough United for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

The Welsh under-21 international turned down the chance of extending his Reds contract and has moved into League One on a three-year deal.

The news comes days after owner Ziya Eren had said he did not want players who were not willing to commit to the club.

Head coach Dermot Drummy said: “I spoke to Gwion about extending his contract beyond the end of next season but he made it clear he wanted a new challenge.

“It’s obviously disappointing to see him go because, even from the short time I worked with him, I could see his qualities. We wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his services with the club.

“It does mean that we have additional funds to invest in strengthening the squad and (assistant) Matt Gray and I are working hard on several potential signings at the moment as we prepare for the start of pre-season next week.”

Reds are close to signing a centre-back, a wide player and two frontmen.
