Dominika Cibulkova became the first Slovakian winner of Eastbourne today.
The diminutive 12th seed defeated tenth seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-3 in 100 minutes in the final of the Aegon International at Devonshire Park.
Cibulkova dominated a scrappy match littered with unforced errors from her towering opponent.
There were seven breaks of serve in the first set and Pliskova failed to capitalise on six break points in successive service games in the second set.
The only time a Slovakian had gone close to landing the pre-Wimbledon showpiece was in 2004, when Daniela Hantuchova was runner-up.
Cibulkova claims a winner's cheque of around £97,000, Pliskova just over £50,000 as the runner-up.
