THE FA need to go back to the future if we are to restore some pride in our national football team.

England's ignominious exit from Euro 2016 following defeat by Iceland highlighted how far out of his depth Roy Hodgson was.

Okay, the players must take their share of the blame but I have no doubt it was the way they were set up and prepared that was the root cause for such a woeful display.

Hodgson got one thing right by resigning immediately after the game but who should replace him? The list of candidates is hardly that inspiring but I would urge the FA to consider bringing back Glenn Hoddle.

He might not be the most inspiring pundit on television but as a coach we haven't had a better one since Alf Ramsay. Who knows what England might have achieved under Hoddle had he not made some misguided comments to the press in 1999 about disabled people?

The FA will probably be too worried about their image to employ Hoddle again but he is knowledge of the game and footballing brain mean he is the best person for the job.
