Ben Brown insists Sussex can still mount a Championship title challenge.

Luke Wright’s men go into today’s clash with Glamorgan at Hove in sixth place in division two having won just once in seven games.

Brown admits Sussex have yet to live up to their billing as pre-season title favourites following relegation from division one but is confident they can reel in the pacesetters in the second half of the season.

Leaders Kent are 35 points clear of Sussex but have played two games more with Essex, Gloucestershire and Leicestershire separated by just six points behind them.

Brown said: “A lot of teams are in the same position. Nobody has won that many games either because of the weather or because of the new toss rules – or a combination of the two – so it means nobody has pulled clear.

“We’ve not played as well as we would have liked but we have just got to hang in there. I know the supporters are frustrated we haven’t been winning but the way the table is at the moment two wins would put us right back in the mix.

“We’ve just got to build up a bit of momentum. We didn’t play well in the last game against Northamptonshire but we are still there or thereabouts.

“In most games we have played good cricket at times but we’ve not been consistent enough. If we can put in a consistently good performance over four days then I’m sure we’ll start to climb the table.”

Brown insists Sussex did not underestimate the competitiveness of division two but expects some teams to switch focus to white-ball cricket in the second half of the summer.

And that could open up an opportunity to challenge for the solitary promotion spot.

He added: “It has been pretty much like I expected in division two. There has been the odd game where I have noticed the difference from division one but otherwise it has been very similar to division one.

“It might change in the second half of the season. Sides who are not really in contention for promotion might drift towards white-ball cricket.

“They might also start to produce more lively pitches too so there will be an opportunity there if we are still in the hunt with four or five games to go.”

Sussex were outplayed in their last game against Northants at Arundel with Wright pointing the finger at the performance of the bowlers.

Vice-captain Brown said: “After the Northants game we spoke about looking at ourselves as individuals and how we each can improve.

“You can blame the batters or the bowlers but for me it is about getting it right as individuals. We’ve all got to look at ourselves.”

Glamorgan are currently rooted to the bottom of the table and have not won at Hove since 1975, losing six and drawing nine of their last 15 visits.

Sussex will be without all-rounder Chris Jordan who is in contention to play for England in the final ODI against Sri Lanka at Cardiff today.

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor comes back into the squad after missing the draw with Northants at Arundel due to a hamstring injury and is likely to replace Harry Finch.
