Albion windfall: Nothing for Wilkins

Albion are looking forward to a £280,000 bonus from a dream move for former striker Colin Kazim-Richards - but boss Dean Wilkins will not see a penny of it.

Chairman Dick Knight is ring-fencing the Seagulls' share of the £1.275 million fee Sheffield United will receive from Turkish Champions League contenders Fenerbahce for Kazim-Richards for the Falmer stadium campaign.

Knight negotiated a healthy 25 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit made on Kazim-Richards by the Yorkshiremen when the errant youngster was sold for £150,000 on the final day of the August transfer window.

Kazim-Richards effectively cost Albion nothing when he was bought from Bury a year earlier.

He was signed using some of the £250,000 won for the club by supporter Aaron Berry in a competition run by Coca-Cola.

Knight said: "It means we have grossed for him well over £400,000 which I think is a fair deal.

"I knew he was a capable player, because we'd had him watched a long time before we won the Coca-Cola money.

"Things didn't quite work out for him here but it's a dream move for Colin and it has worked out well for us. It's a windfall that I am very pleased to have been able to get for the club. Good luck to Colin and well done to Sheffield United, because they played him and he has gone up in value.

"Everyone's a winner, certainly Colin is. He is going to play in the Champions League because Fenerbahce won the Turkish Championship."

A decision by Knight to reject Sheffield's bid to buy out the sell-on clause for £125,000 at the end of the season, when the Blades were on the brink of relegation from the Premiership, has also been spectacularly vindicated but the money will not be available to Wilkins for team strengthening ahead of Albion's League One campaign.

Knight said: "We have already allocated a healthy playing budget for this season, in the higher echelons of League One. This money will help to pay for the stadium costs, simple as that.

"All of this money will be allocated to reducing the huge costs of the Falmer project, particularly the legal costs we have been forced to incur in the last few months because of Lewes District Council."

Albion will receive their share of the Kazim-Richards fee on the drip, rather than in one lump sum, as Fenerbahce are paying for him in installments.

The switch to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium completes an incredible transformation in fortunes for Kazim-Richards, 20. He was in Albion's Reserves after handing in a transfer request when United came in for him.

He made 29 appearances for the Blades and the Londoner, who qualifies to play for Turkey through his mother, made his international debut towards the end of the campaign.

Kazim-Richards was also wanted by Turkey's other top two clubs, Besiktas and Galatasaray. He will be playing for Fenerbahce under former Braziilian legend Zico and alongside world class players like Roberto Carlos, Mateja Kezman and Alex.

Absolute disgrace. Initially 250k was won by the fans of which only 125k was spent. We then got 150k of which none went on players and now 250k which we are told will not go on players. Daylight robbery. 250K could buy us a 20 goal striker but instead we wont get this and resign ourselves to mid table at very best. I understand Falmer is a black hole but surely a 50/50 split was needed in this instance. Dick Knight - the fans got you this . Dont mug us off again !!! Unbelievable

this falmer story is becoming a lame duck, we sold virgo, cullip, currie, zamora, the young left back to leeds, and now we have got over 500k from a supporter who won it from pepsi! falmer was not going to be easy to get planning, so the club should have allowed some money from that, we had compensation for adams, coppel, and taylor. and we have kept players who wont be first choice next year. and we pay the highest gate prices, not only in div 1 but most of the championship as well. if we need this windfall? how are we seriously going to build falmer.

It is annoying but at the end of the day... i think the money which knight is saying is for 'Falmer' is in fact going to be used for running costs.... at if that is what it takes to keep the club going then fair enough, remember we have lost over 100k on poor season ticke sales

It was Dan Harding who went to leeds and coca-cola,not Pepsi. An argument always sounds better when you get your facts straight. However, this money should betreated as a bonus and bunged on the transfer pile. What's the point in getting Falmer when we're a conference side?

dave the facts i stated are relevant, as i said pepsi and not coca cola, does it alter the monies that dick has " had to use for falmer" if the club are so hard up, why have we the biggest squad in the league? ( excluding leeds) and dave is it time of the month?

Pre season predictions of mid table from everyone, no money and waiting for obviously correct(again)decisi
on to start the Falmer build.

I really fear we are wrong, we couldn't muster the handful of points we needed at the end of last season to save ourselves. Having looked at the fixture list for next year I think it looks tougher. IF we are relegated to L2 the safety net disappears again and the next relegation is obvilion.

Mr Knight is a Brighton hero but in this case he is quick to describe his good business in the market. He is now far too defensive and chancing the £100k that was not accounted for was the easy way to win us over and create the excitement to generate some revenue. A new season is bringing excitement to most of the other 92 clubs. Better get on a PR tour of Sussex Mr Knight lest you forget the fans connection with their club, the one you helped save and the one you currently run.

Sorry what was the question?

I'm appalled at the short-sighted naivety of some Albion fans. Do they really want us to blow the money on a season, bankrupt the club and then have a Ken Bates type character come in?
Personally, I'd rather have a board who are Albion supporters through and through and focussed on the long term future of our club.

The long term sustainability of the club is paramount. If that means putting the money towards the running costs of the club then so bit. Although it is very annoying. If it wasn't for financial mis-management by certain previous members of the Board we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. Rather have a finacially stable football club than one where we blow all the money on a couple of players to try and get us promoted. Is there a big difference between Chapmpionship level football and League 1 in any case? Until we get Falmer that is all that matters. Having said this I do believe that in certain instances in the past money should have been more readily given to the manager to invest in new players. Otherwise supporters lose interset in watching a poor side and that in turn costs the club more money in the long term.

In case you hadnt noticed mate if we hadnt sold Virgo and Harding the club would have made a loss of approx £2 million in the last financial year! Prices at Withdean are high but I for one am happy to pay it if it helps keep the club afloat (although I do appreciate not everyone can afford it)!

Chelsea were on the brink (financially) until Roman can to their rescue.

Trust Bates more than Knight? Some people are exceedingly ignorant.

If you want a club that splashes cash left, right and centre then I would suggest you find another club. The reason why we are still in business is due to the prudent running of the club. We have missed out on estimated £30m worth of revenue since leaving the Goldstone and the only assets we have are players. The Falmer decision is just around the corner and we have to be patient.

This money may mean that we do not have to sell a Dean Cox or do not have to sell a Joel Lynch.

Patience is a virtue!

We havent strengthened the squad other than whing & 4 youngsters which will all been loaned out next season. We finished very very close to the relegation end. We NEED the money to buy some half decent players to get us out of the ****. Dick Tight says a players budget has been agreed....but where is it. Same old story...says there is a budget but we never seem to spend it !!!! It then gets lost and swallowed in the black hole. I agree with a previous comment. No good having Falmer in the conference.

Humphrey, Hove says...
11:38am Sat 16 Jun 07

Agree with Nick (LA). It was short sighted to take compensation money for Coppell. Very short sighted. With a good manager in charge he can get you players on the cheap and then sell them for lots of money just by turning average players into good ones. For example, look at how Coppell has boght in Steven Hunt to Reading. Hunt now has international recognition. Coppell wanted to bring Hunt to Brighton on a free! Coppell has also bought in that Irish striking sensation to Reading on the cheap. Contrast all that to Maghee. Yes Maghee made us two million for Virgo but that was only because it was a dodgy deal with Maghees mate. When Maghee spent money he usually wasted it. Even with kazim Richards MaGhee still couln't bring out the best in him. Only a sell on cluse actually earned us any money out of that one and that probably wasn't even down to Maghee.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. The club has done a brilliant piece of business on a player who completely failed to live up to his promise and ability. The idea of CKR playing in the Champions League is incredible but if it nets us £250k or more I can live with it. We've basically made about £400k out of this, thanks to Dick Knight's good sense of business. Most of the fans posting here would presumably have taken up Sheff Utd's offer to buy out the sell-on clause and we'd have seen next to nothing. We should be congratulating Dick Knight, not slagging him off.

As to what we should do with the money, Falmer is the biggest issue the club faces and thanks to Lewes DC the bill keeps rising. Investing in Falmer is investing in the future of this club, just the same as buying a new CKR would be. The difference is that Falmer will deliver!

If you have a player who is good enough to play against Brazil, in the Premiership(not in his favoured position) and next season in the Champions League alongside Roberto Carlos, then why let him go in the first place? CKR was a player of great quality, or at least potential who was not given a chance. If he had played a full season at League One level, then perhaps we would have been fending off million pound bids, rather than taking a cut from Sheffield United's fantastic piece of business. It is tiresome to hear excuses as to the poor quality of the squad and the inability to attract players, when we allow a player of his standard to go so cheaply; Sheffield United paid a pittance for him (How often do players who show such potential move to a team two divisions above for roughly the same as was paid for them?). Granted he may have had an ego, but that's the way footballers are. Dick Knight is, without question, a very decent man, not a greedy wideboy as many characters in the game are, but his decision to appoint himself as a mentor to Dean Wilkins in the transfer market is misguided; I heard him say in an interview, for example, that Turienzo had played for River Plate when, in fact he had not (He represented Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata with very limited success). Sadly, we have no money, but we must learn from our mistakes and certainly should not consider an overall return of 400,000 on CKR as anything like good business.

On the positive side, however, we are not the most beleaguered club in the League as some have suggested. The club's tribulations over the last few years did serve to galvanise us and, I believe, help to push us up into the second tier. There is a possibility that this could happen again. All I would ask is that Dick Knight seeks the advice of a seasoned pro with regard to purchases (Bassett, Hollins, Don Howe). Forgive me for the rambling nature of this post and I apologise if it has bored anybody.

I would like to say how interesting the comments on this story are. Some saying that this money is an unexpected bonus so lets spend it whilst others looking to be more prudent and put it towards the inevitable costs of obtaining a stadium that the club and its loyal supporters deserve. There is a difficult line to follow between the two schools of thought and I for one don't envy Mr K in having to pick his way through. The one common theme that all the comments share is that the author's share a desire to see the club move forward and that is something that should be embracced regardless of your point of view. However can I throw three points into the equastion that at the least may provoke some comment. Firstly the body that is really squeezing the life blood out of the club is Lewes District Council and Falmer Parish Council. I find it bizarre that certain members of Falmer Parish Council masquarade as Albion fans but are the first ones to write to the papers to stick the knife in when anyone dares to support the Falmer proposal. Why don't Albion fans boycott the local business that they run and hit them where it hurts, in the pocket? On the subject of admission prices why does the board not introduce a slight reduction in prices to try to fill the ground. Whilst this may not improve the overall gross receipts the benefits would be earnt by the money that those extra fans spend on merchandising etc and the extra fans will at least improve the atmosphere in a difficult location. Finally does anyone else share my opinion that the appointment of Mr W & Co is an admission that until the club can move to a new stadium this crew will just hold water and mid-table Division 1 mediocrity is the best that we can hope for. If we really wanted to move forward why not use the CKR windfall to bring back Mickey Adams. Collectively the current crop of young players are only capable of maintaining our current position. If any of them are individually above this standard we all know that they will not be here in twelve months time. Like the previous contributor I am sorry if this goes on but hopefully it will be thought, and comment, provoking.

I think we are lucky to have DK who does care about the club.
It is important this season he gets the right balance of having a decent calibre squad to hold their own in this league and having cash to fund falmer and cover losses . We definetely need to be better than we were at the end of the season or relegation may threaten. That means keeping the likes of Lynch Hammond Reid and Hinshelwood (if fit and back to form) we need more of a blend of experince and skill as well as youth. I would be happy if we are mid table at the end of the next season with our current finances and winning more at Withers ...

That £250K was put up by Coca Cola to be spent on a player, not a staduim. We were lucky to win it, the money should be used as intended by Coke, to get and pay the wages of a good player, preferably a striker, improve the quality of football at the Withdean and get the crowds back. That way the money for Falmer will come.

We will lose Bertin; as he is too good for this league. As for who might replace him I would rather see El-Abd in the middle rather than the over the hill, injury prone Charlie Oatway who is too slow anyway.

The signing of Whing will help the back four. A back four of Whing, Hinshelwood, Butters and Lynch look very good on paper.

What a surprise! Wilkins won't see a penny of the money from the sale of Colin Kazim-Richards to Turkish champions Fenerbache.

Our squad is too large (currently 30) and full of rubbish and contains too many teenagers (14). Probably of which half are not up to the required standard. We don’t need more than 22 players! We would be better served getting rid of 10 players and bringing in two quality players instead.

I suppose if Wilkins does get sacked by Christmas the first job of the new manager will be reduce the size of the squad by clearing out the rubbish that is currently within the squad. It would probably be on the scale of Micky Adams in his first season as manager of Brighton.

The bookies have us as fourth favourites to be relegated. I think they are right that we will struggle next season.

That is the only reason I can think of, because, from what I hear, the only racist that has been with the Albion was sold and is now struggling to stay at any club because he is a disruptive influence wherever he goes. Also, do you seriosuly think Michel Kuipers would stand for that? It would be tantamount to suicide!

i agree with u dave i always said falmer was the wrong option, i cant prove it at the moment but believe me reliable sources told me that 2 of our oldest pros did not get on well with ckr, although he came across well on talksport this lunchtime we wish him well in istanbul...

I understand that the reason Falmer was stated to be the only option was that the hotel that will be built alongside the ground would be a bigger moneyspinner at that venue.
Would I be correct in thinking that the present board would be in prime position to be the main shareholders in the Hotel and any other commercial spin offs around the Falmer site?
