ALBION midfielder Steve Sidwell says English football’s week of shame should be a wake-up call and corruption stamped out immediately in cases where it can be proven.

The domestic game has been rocked by revelations in the Daily Telegraph which brought down England manager Sam Allardyce, have called into question the conduct of Premier League managers past and present and prompted the sacking by Barnsley of their assistant manager Tommy Wright.

Allardyce was caught on camera offering advice on how to “get around” FA rules on player transfers, while eight un-named ex and existing Premier League managers stand accused of receiving bungs.

Barnsley have dismissed Wright, days after their visit to the Amex, following footage of him apparently accepting money in return for allegedly helping persuade the Championship club to sign players.

Sidwell, a veteran of 200 Premier League games for Reading, Chelsea, Fulham, Aston Villa and Stoke, said of the stories dominating the front pages: “It is not nice to see.

“There is no proof as yet in the stuff about Premier League managers but it’s not a nice part of the game that you want to see.

“The Premier League and football is a billion pound business –and in any walks of life there is going to be some corruption in certain industries.

“If there is in this game then you want it kicked out straight away. So hopefully this will be a wake-up call if it does go any further and it will just get stamped out.”

Albion manager Chris Hughton said: “I think we have a very good game here and, I believe, a very clean game.

“There are always going to be things that surprise you. It’s been a tough week. The quicker that detail comes out and any situations or problems are resolved the better.

“That would allow the game to get back to what it should be about, brilliant games like Celtic v Manchester City and, in our division, Newcastle against Norwich.”

Sidwell is set to partner Ollie Norwood against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough tomorrow. Albion are without both the suspended Dale Stephens and injured Beram Kayal for only the second time in their last 75 Championship fixtures.
