STEVE SIDWELL has hailed a “brilliant” defensive performance to get Albion back on winning track.

The deep-lying midfielder was outstanding as the Seagulls secured last night’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

It was a richly-deserved success but they had to weather a storm at the end to avoid a repeat of Saturday’s late despair against Preston.

Sidwell said: “We had to dig deep and show some resilience.

“With what happened in the last game, we made sure we didn’t let it happen again.

“Of course what happened then was on our minds, especially with the spate of corners they had at the end.

“But we made sure at every corner we set up right. Mentally we were on it.

“Whoever was marking their man made sure he didn’t score and I thought we defended brilliantly.

“We had to dig deep and sometimes you get more satisfaction from winning these games than by romping games by three or four.”

David Stockdale, who made two important saves late on, revealed Sidwell reminded him about a Premier League star in the late drama.

Stockdale said: “Siddy came up to me and said, ‘Remember David De Gea yesterday (for Manchester United at Liverpool), he had nothing to do and then made a save right near the end’.

“I’m not saying that I was De Gea but he was saying to concentrate because things can happen late in the game.”
