Dale Stephens has urged Albion’s midfielders and defenders to add goals to the promotion push.

Stephens came off the bench to score the winner at Wigan last Saturday.

It was the first Championship goal from a midfielder or defender this season.

They had been shared previously between strike trio Glenn Murray, Sam Baldock and Tomer Hemed, and winger Anthony Knockaert.

Stephens told The Argus: “You can’t just rely on your attacking players. Your centre-halves have got to be a threat from set-pieces and corners.

“Myself, I’ve said it previously, that I need to add more goals to my game.

“I managed to get seven last year. I’ll be looking to get a better return but we’ve got to contribute all over the park, like the strikers do when they are defending.”

Albion, currently second, have an opportunity to open a four-point gap over Norwich in fourth when the teams meet at the Amex on Saturday.

Stephens, in contention for his first home start for a month in the centre of the park, said: “They will be strong this year, we knew that at the start of the season.

“But it’s an opportunity to put a bit of space between us. It’s a big game, we want it to be a big game – we don’t want it to be anything else.

“We are confident, with the run we’ve had, that we can put a performance on and get the right result.”
