Chris Hughton felt Albion’s 0-0 draw at Cardiff was a chance missed.
But he admitted Neil Warnock’s side were tough to break down.
The Seagulls missed out on the win which would have taken them top of the Championship.
And their manager was disappointed they did not offer more threat to Ben Amos in the home goal.
Hughton said: “I think it was certainly an opportunity missed with the form we are in.
“But sometimes you have got to give respect to the opposition.
“They played a formation that was very difficult to break down.
“It was a 4-3-3 that on most occasions was a 4-5-1.
“We dominated possession and, when you do, you have got to look at those opportunities to break them down.
“We probably didn’t have enough in the 90 minutes.
“The limited 90 chances we had – and I thought they were decent half-chances – we needed to take one of them which certainly would have opened up the game more.
“They blocked the holes very well, had a back four who were fairly resilient and five across midfield.
“You have got to hope the game opens up and you get your opportunities.”
