David Stockdale has urged Albion’s squad to go on a run in the FA Cup.

The Seagulls goalkeeper is today confirmed on a four-man shortlist for the Sky Bet Championship player of the month award for December while Albion boss Chris Hughton is in contention for the manager’s prize.

Stockdale is likely to make way for Niki Maenpaa in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at home to MK Dons while Uwe Huenemeier and Connor Goldson feature in central defence.

He insists all three have been impressing in training and was thrilled to see his understudy Maenpaa shine in the Checkatrade Trophy. Now he wants to see them get as much as game time as they can in cup competitions.

Stockdale said: “Connor and Uwe have been looking very good in training and then you have got Niki as well.

“Connor is pushing the boys but it’s a friendly push. It’s not like ‘I’m going to take your spot’.

“They say their bit and that’s it. If lads in the team are playing well, what can you do? You’ve just got to play your best and be ready.

“The Cup is a chance for all those boys and hopefully they get as far as they can.

“As a club and as a team we want to do well, we want to get to finals, we want to be promoted. All those things tick those boxes and they will be doing their best.”

Stockdale’s own form had been recognised even before he started January with a penalty save at Fulham.

He is in contention along with three goal-getters for the divisional prize for December with the selection panel citing performances at Blackburn and Birmingham in his nomination.

Speaking before his nomination was announced, Stockdale welcomed personal honours for the Albion squad but put the emphasis on the end goal of promotion.

He said: “Anybody would take not getting a medal through the season if it meant getting one at the end.

“But it’s nice and the awards that are given are fully deserved. I also think there are a lot of good players who get missed off those lists.”

Stockdale rivals for the honour are Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, who scored six times in December, revitalised Wolves midfielder David Edwards, who notched four times, and Barnsley frontman Sam Winnall, who netted six times in as many games.

Winners will be announced tomorrow and are being selected by a panel of Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, League Managers’ Association director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet football trading manager Paul Lowery.
