Sam Baldock has revealed how he is walking a fitness tightrope in a bid to help Albion reach the Premier League.

Baldock hopes to make a third successive start when the Seagulls visit Barnsley on Saturday having sat out the previous five matches.

But the striker recognises he needs to be careful to ensure his injury troubles do not flare up again.

He told The Argus: “I have an issue in my calf. It’s okay but it was hard to determine what the issue was.

“I think it was coming from my back. I had a procedure to put that right but it was trial and error.”

Baldock’s movement is seen as a key part of Albion’s attacking play and they are loath to take any risks with him.

He added: “I was available at Brentford but the manager didn’t want to risk me for one game. He wanted me for a longer period rather than rush me back.

“It is something that might just come. You can never say it is ever solved but hopefully, with a bit of work, we can minimise the chances of it returning.”

Meanwhile Baldock has praised strike partner Tomer Hemed’s recent goal-getting run.

Hemed, out of the starting line-up for much of the season, has scored in his last five league outings and moved into double figures for the Championship campaign.

Baldock said: “I remember telling Tomer a while back he’d definitely be needed because he’s a big player for us. We know he’s someone who can chip in with goals. It was important he stayed confident and he’s getting the rewards now.”
