Sussex have moved quickly to tie down hot prospect Delray Rawlins - by handing him a second contract in the space of five months.

Rawlins penned his first professional contract at Hove in October after impressive performances in the 2nd XI last season earned him a one-year deal.

The all-rounder underlined his potential with a series of fine innings for England under-19 in India during the winter and has now been awarded an extention which will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2018 campaign.

Sussex coach Mark Davis said: "It’s really exciting for another young prospect to extend their contract with us. We have some really talented young players coming through and Delray fits firmly into the category.

“He had a fantastic winter with the England Under-19s and gained some vital experience, which stands him in good stead for challenging for first-team honours this season.”

Rawlins hit two centuries for England under-19s in India - averaging 97 with the bat - and also picked up nine wickets with his improving left-arm spin.

He has continued his encouraging form in pre-season for Sussex to force his way into contention for the opening Championship match against Kent on April 14.

The former St Bede's pupil said: "I’m obviously pleased to extend my contract. I’ve had a good winter and this is a reward of going to India and doing well.

“I always back myself to do well, but even I exceeded my expectations there. It was nice to get runs in a place where it is often hard to do so.

“It’s nice to have that extra year on top now. I’m feeling good at the moment. I want to play as much cricket as I can in the first team and do as well as I can.”
