Goal hero Glenn Murray turned into a Scouser after stabbing Albion a big step closer to the Premier League.

"Calm down, calm down" was a catchphrase made popular by Harry Enfield on the BBC in the 1980's in a series of sketches called 'The Scousers'.

Amex king Murray used his hands to express the same plea after scoring the only goal against Blackburn Rovers.

The result, combined with Huddersfield's last-gasp home defeat by Burton by the same score, has catapulted the Seagulls nine points clear in second in the automatic promotion race with seven games to go.

Murray said of his celebration: "It wasn't really a message to anyone. We've been in this position before, not just last year. Brighton have gone close quite a few times and it hasn't quite happened yet.

"We don't want that to happen again and we just need to calm down and enjoy the moment we're in.

"It's when you are fighting at the other end of the league, that's when it's really tough. When you are fighting at the right end it should be an enjoyable period."

Murray was partnered for the first time by on-loan Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom, handed his first start after seven sub appearances due to a minor hip injury for Sam Baldock.

Akpom struggled and was given a hard time by some supporters, even receiving a few boos when he was replaced by Tomer Hemed early in the second half.

That did not go down well with Murray, who accused Akpom's knockers of being "fickle".

He told The Argus: "The first half would have been difficult for anyone. It was that type of game, neither team wanted to give much and I didn't think it really opened up second half either.

"It was just one of those games where just one chance and luckily that fell to us.

"I can't see how people can get on his back and that's exactly what we don't want. Chuba was trying his best.

"I'm sure they wouldn't have been on his back if he'd curled one in from 25 yards. It's fickle in my eyes. We need everyone."

Murray shrugged off a left thigh injury which had to be heavily strapped early on to complete the 90 minutes.

He now hopes to reach 20 goals for the third time in his career against Birmingham tomorrow night at the Amex, where he has also scored a remarkable 20 goals in 23 appearances for Albion, Reading and Crystal Palace.

"That's always the aim," he said. "To get that again would be very nice.

"It is a beautiful place to play football, a fantastic arena, and when it's full it's even better. The sun's shining and we're winning games, what more can you want?"
