Steve Magoffin is set for second team action as Sussex nurse him back to full fitness.

The experienced pace bowler has been kept out of the Championship tussle against Durham as Vernon Philander and Chris Jordan return to increase seam options.

Sussex are targeting the fixture against Kent at Tunbridge Wells, starting on Friday, for Magoffin to return.

That hinges on how he fares in second team action this week against Glamorgan.

There is a one-dayer at Blackstone today and a three-day fixture at Preston Nomads from tomorrow, which looks like Magoffin’s big chance.

Sussex coach Mark Davis said: “He will do some bowling on Tuesday, hopefully to get him sharp for Tunbridge Wells.

“It will leave us with a great decision to make. I don’t think we have had a decision like that for ten years, when you don’t know who to play in the seam attack.

“It is normally trying to find three or four bowlers to use.

“CJ has been away with the IPL and with England, we have had a couple of injury niggles over the years.

“It has been a long time since we have had those riches.”

Philander started what is planned to be a run of four Championship outings after recovering in South Africa from a groin injury.

Ben Brown (broken finger), Matt Machan (wrist) and Ollie Robinson (shins) all remain sidelined with injury.
