Jamie Murphy has been told he grew up during Albion’s two seasons of pushing for promotion.

The Albion winger has been rewarded with a call-up to the Scotland squad to face England at Hampden Park on June 10.

Scotland assistant boss Mark McGhee says Murphy has improved his “set of bagpipes” physique with the Seagulls.

He reckons that will stand the former Motherwell flyer in great stead as he prepares for life in the Premier League – and possibly the international stage.

McGhee, the former Albion boss, told The Argus:” Jamie had a great season.

“He made 23 starts and when he came off the bench he made an impact.

“He is coming from an upbeat environment at Brighton.

“Physically he looks like a man now. When I used to see him, he looked like a set of bagpipes.

“With the strength and conditioning work he has done, he looks a mature athlete now and he is going into the Premier League so he has to be.”

Murphy was involved in 35 of Albion’s league matches last term as they won promotion, starting 20 and scoring twice, as well as making three cup appearances.

He has been close to a call-up for some time and almost received a tip-off during the recent promotion parade.

McGhee said: “I was at the celebration and was hoping to speak to him as they came off the bus.

“I didn’t spot him so I didn’t get the chance to mark his card.”

Murphy is believed to be battling with one other attacking player to remain involved when the squad is cut from 29 to 23.
