Brits suffered early exits in the women's and men's events at Eastbourne today.
But Naomi Broady and Kyle Edmund went down fighting in the Aegon International.
Both were beaten in three sets by higher ranked opponents.
Wild card Broady, ranked 111, took the second set tie-break 9-7 against Kristyna Pliskova to level their first round match on court one.
The world No.46 Czech eventually prevailed 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to book a second round meeting with top seed and world No.1 Angelique Kerber.
In the men's event, Edmund (above) also took the second set on centre court against American left-hander Donald Young.
Edmund, ranked 48, one place lower than his rival, could not sustain the recovery.
Facing a second match point, he made a horrible mess of an attempted forehand drop volley as Young progressed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in 1hr 55mins.
