Luke Wright has scored Sussex’s first pink-ball Championship century..

Wright combined with his successor as captain Ben Brown to put the county in a strong position against Gloucestershire at Hove in a day-nighter division two fixture.

Sussex reached ‘tea’ on 258-5 with 172 runs coming during the middle session.

Wright was 106 not out at the break and had just been joined by Chris Jordan. The centurion hit three sixes, including one off the first ball he faced, and reached his 17th first-class ton when he struck David Payne back down the ground for his 12th boundary.

It came up off exactly 100 balls and was his first at Hove for two days shy of two years.

From 69-3 at the first break, Wright and Stiaan van Zyl rebuilt the innings with 99 in 19 overs for the fourth wicket.

Jack Taylor took some punishment but also found enough first-day turn to have van Zyl caught at short leg for 35.

Brown, in his first match since replacing Wright as captain, joined his predecessor to score freely, even when the pink ball had to be changed because of excessive wear and tear after 54 overs.

They added 92 in 18 overs with Brown scoring 52 on his return after six weeks out with a broken finger from 62 deliveries. He struck Taylor for six but two balls after reaching his half-century with his seventh four he drove to cover on the up.
