ALBION face spiralling transfer fees, salaries and financial demands as they attempt to assemble a squad capable of staying in the Premier League.

Boss Chris Hughton believes mega-deals involving top clubs have filtered down to the rest.

Players’ values have doubled or in some cases tripled in the space of a season.

Manchester United splashed out nearly £90 million last summer to re-sign French midfeld star Paul Pogba from Juventus.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, 23, has just joined Everton for £30 million, while Leeds have slapped a £15 million price tag on ex-Seagull Chris Wood after the Kiwi striker finished top scorer in the Championship.

Hughton told The Argus: “The big difference for any team getting promotion is transfer fees and salaries.

“It’s just how things have changed. Over the last year, some of the big name transfer fees have pushed up. You look at the sort of money even some of the top teams are being quoted for some of these top players and I think that has a knock-on effect.

“Players that were £5 million to £8 million last season are now £10 million to £12 million or £12 million to £15 million.

“The difficulty is the knock-on effect but that is something we are going to have to cope with and get around.”

Albion and Newcastle, who pipped them to the Championship title, are set to lose out to Swansea in the battle to borrow England under-21s striker Tammy Abraham from Chelsea.

The Welshmen are willing to fork out an extra £1 million  relating to fees for the player, his family and agent.

Hughton said: “If we miss out on Abraham it’s onto the next one, that’s how it goes.

“We have still got two months of the transfer window and players will become available that weren’t before.”

Abraham features for England under-21s in the semi-finals of the European Championships against Germany in Poland today (5pm).
