Tim Krul is in the mix to be Albion’s No.1 as they prepare for another showdown with his former club Newcastle.

Boss Chris Hughton says the Dutchman will be competing for the gloves with current first choice Mathew Ryan and Niki Maenpaa after his loan move became permanent.

Hughton is weighing up his options between the posts for Newcastle’s visit tomorrow (4pm).

He told The Argus: “I like to think I’ve got three goalkeepers who are all pushing. Maty of course, who came in the summer, and Niki, who has done well for us on every occasion when he has had to.

Mathew Ryan make a great save from West Brom's Gareth Barry

“I think I’m in a very good position at the moment where I’ve got three very competitive goalkeepers, Tim being the newest of the three, having come just before the window closed.

“It is important for the goalkeepers themselves. I wouldn’t want somebody that I would regard as the first choice at any particular time and not feeling under pressure that he has a goalkeeper or two goalkeepers underneath him that are very much trying to become the number one choice.”

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has added spice to the Premier League collision between the top two rivals in the Championship last season with a terse farewell to Krul.

Frozen out by Benitez after an 11-year association with Newcastle, Krul made a commanding debut in Albion’s Carabao Cup exit at Bournemouth on Tuesday before his permanent move was announced the following day, freeing him for consideration to face his old club.

“He knew our decision,” Benitez said. “They (Albion) announced it now, but they knew before. We wish him all the best after this game.”

Krul, who played under Hughton at Newcastle, has not passed on any inside information on the in-form team of Benitez.

“I think it’s more difficult these days because you don’t generally miss too much,” Hughton said. “We see all the games, all the angles, and everything we would like to know about Newcastle is not difficult to see, so no special tips.”

Benitez has a goalkeeping decision of his own to make. Karl Darlow has recovered from a leg injury to compete with England under-20s World Cup hero Freddie Woodman as cover for No.1 Rob Elliot.
