Albion are back on winning track – after a monumental effort at home to Newcastle today.

The Seagulls won 1-0 thanks to Tomer Hemed’s 51st-minute strike.

They played some exciting stuff going forward in that period after the interval.

But they had to defend manfully in the closing stages as their visitors, off the back of three successive wins, threw the lot at them.

An array of clearances and blocks came in – before a raucous home crowd could celebrate three points in style.

The Argus:

Tomer Hemed hits the winner

The only goal came from a superbly worked set-piece.

Hemed hooked home from close range after Pascal Gross had drilled a pinpoint free-kick to beyond the far post and Dale Stephens nodded it back across goal.

Solly March was inches away from adding a second soon after.

His low shot when he shot was blocked right on the line by the foot of keeper Rob Elliot after a super move involving trickery from Gross and Knockaert followed by Bruno’s low cross.

But Newcastle responded and Mikel Merino saw a shot deflect just wide before sub Jonjo Shelvey hit the near post direct from a corner.

That was the fore-runner to an all-out Toon onslaught late on but Albion defended manfully.

The first half was goalless but entertaining enough to watch.

Gross had a goalbound effort blocked by team-mate Knockaert.

And Elliot struggled to push away an angled March effort.

But Ayoze Perez curled a shot just over for the visitors and Joselu dragged one narrowly wide.
