Chris Hughton admitted his Albion side “well below” par as they crashed to Liverpool.
The Seagulls created several chances but were beaten 5-1 by Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Two late goals added to their woe after they had threatened to come back from 3-0 down.
Asked if Liverpool were the best side Albion have faced this season, Hughton replied: “Yes – but I’d also have to say you have got to have a level of performance to have a chance in the game.
“We added to it. I thought they were good and gave us a harsh lesson today.
“But we were also well below the levels we have been at this season.”
