Albion winger Anthony Knockaert took missing out on the chin

The French right-winger travelled but was omitted from the squad for the 2-0 defeat in Yorkshire.

Ezequiel Schelotto was handed his first Premier League start in place of Knockaert, pictured, but the Italian was substituted at half-time.

Hughton said of Knockaert’s reaction: “He was fine, Anthony always is. It’s very much a team game and he, the same as everybody, can’t play every game.

“Sometimes you make decisions for particular reasons. I don’t think the start of the game or formation had anything to do with the two goals we conceded. They, for me, were probably the two most disappointing things.”

Knockaert has struggled to hit the heights of last season, when he was the best player in the Championship.

Hughton said: “It’s tougher for him, the same as everybody. If I am looking at the goals and assists he had last season, he is up against better full-backs and better players, as is everybody else.

“We haven’t scored too many goals in the last few games. Well, we are up against better teams, better defenders, quicker defenders and it’s going to be tougher.

“Over this period of games I have to pick a team that I think is the right team for a particular game.

“This (Huddersfield) was going to be a difficult game away from home against an expansive team that are very good on the ball and the full-backs play very high. That’s why I played the team I did.”

Hughton has the option of making changes on Wednesday against Spurs at Wembley, ahead of Saturday’s visit by Burnley.

Knockaert and Gaetan Bong are poised for immediate recalls. Solly March, Jose Izquierdo and Tomer Hemed all came off the bench at Huddersfield and Connor Goldson, who had an outing in the under-23s on Friday, could also come into the reckoning.

Other contenders include Sam Baldock (calf), who featured in the squad at Huddersfield for the first time this season, together with fellow unused substitutes Tim Krul, Uwe Huenemeier and Beram Kayal.
