ALAN MULLERY has urged Albion to rise to an opportunity Pele never had during his glittering career.

The club’s ambassador and Tottenham legend was accustomed to playing at Wembley.

He captained Spurs to domestic honours and England at the old version of the national stadium.

Tomorrow night’s Premier League clash at the new Wembley gives Albion’s players a chance which greats of the game missed out on.

Mullery told The Argus: “Tottenham at Wembley for me will be fantastic with my involvement with both teams.

“I’m really happy that we have got a team going to play there. It will be a great day for them, to go and play in the national stadium.

“I said to Pele one day did he have any regrets in his football career? He bit his lip a little bit and said ‘Yes, I never played at Wembley’. That’s how much it meant to him. Everyone throughout the football world knows about Wembley.”

Mullery has played down Tottenham’s modest record at Wembley, where they are playing home matches this season while their new stadium next to White Hart Lane is under construction.

Burnley, Swansea and West Brom held them to draws but they have also had handsome wins against Liverpool, Real Madrid in the Champions League and Stoke on Saturday, which ended a run of two defeats and two draws in the Premier League.

Mullery said: “That’s gone out of the window. They were not having a particularly good time but they were playing against teams that put out 11 defenders. They knew if they didn’t they would be beaten badly.

“When Liverpool came to Wembley, most of their players had played there and Tottenham stuffed them 4-1.

“It’s nothing to do with that, then beating Real Madrid 3-1. It’s nothing to do with the stadium, it was to do with players’ form.”

Mauricio Pochettino believes opponents are lifted this season by visiting Tottenham.

The Spurs manager said: “It is not an excuse but when the opponents come to play against us at Wembley it’s a massive, historic day (for them), and that is a massive motivation. You’re not only competing with the opponent but with the opponent but with the extra motivation too.”
