Ezequiel Schelotto has been given license to attack when he starts for Albion – and he is delighted about it.

The long-striding right-back has revelled in his recent run of three starts in the last four games.

And he is pleased Chris Hughton wants him to use the attacking instincts he feels form a key part of his overall game.

Schelotto has started home games against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, offering a bit more scope to get up and down the touchline than his previous two outings away to Tottenham and Chelsea as Hughton rotated.

Bruno is expected to come back into the side at West Bromwich Albion.

But Schelotto feels he has done his cause no harm at all with recent performances.

The summer signing from Sporting in Portugal believes he has given a taste of what he can do – at both ends of the pitch.

He told The Argus: “I’m really happy with how it’s going. This is what I wanted.

“I have waited a long time to have a few games in a row.

“I think I’ve shown some of what I can do but I’m not going to be content with that. I’ll keep working, keep improving.

“I’ve got my head held high, I’m feeling very calm and happy.

“I feel I have adapted very well to English football.

“I’ve been getting up and down the pitch a lot but that is my way of playing. I’ve done it all my clubs in the past.

“I’m a player who attacks a lot, who helps colleagues up front.

“I know how to defend. The first thing in a full-back’s head is to defend.

“But today full-backs attack a lot and the gaffer gives me that freedom to use my best footballing characteristics.”

Schelotto limped out of the New Year’s Day draw with Bournemouth with his side clinging to a 2-1 lead.

But that first win in England came on Monday when Palace were beaten in the FA Cup.

That could mean he gets a run out at the Riverside in the fourth round, depending on how selection policy is going by then.

The Argentinean-Italian felt it was important to get a victory, even with no Premier League points at stake.

He said: “We were very happy. The fundamental thing was to win the match.

“We felt we needed to put on a good show for our fans.

“We had a time when we felt we had the game under control, comfortable.

“We had two very clear chances to score which we didn’t take but we responded well and it all turned out how we wanted.”

The Argus:

Schelotto has struck up a close friendship with Jose Izquierdo, pictured above, during their first months in Brighton.

Neither have found the path to regular Premier League action to be a smooth one but they have enjoyed recent weeks.

Schelotto believes Albion have a star on their hands in Izquierdo and hopes the double-assist outing against Bournemouth will prove to be a key moment in his colleague’s Albion career.

He said: “I’m really pleased for Jose. He works very hard during the week and is a real team-player.

“He has a big future. I get on well with him. We are always together. He is showing high quality game after game.

“You always try to be ready because they can call you up at any moment.

“I’ve waited quite a while but now things are turning out how I wanted them to and that’s by playing and helping the team the way I know best.”
