Albion defender Gaetan Bong wants West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez to be punished by the FA for an alleged "racist" remark.

The FA have opened an investigation into an allegation made by Bong against Rodriguez during yesterday's 2-0 Premier League defeat for the Seagulls at the Hawthorns.

The pair clashed in the 56th minute and footage showed Rodriguez pinching his own nose.

Bong reacted angrily and protested immediately to referee Martin Atkinson. He spoke to both players, then passed on details of the allegation to fourth official Tony Harrington.

According to the Sunday Times Bong alleges Rodriguez used the words "you're black and you stink".

Bong, speaking tonight on French Tv channel SFR Sport, said: "He (Rodriguez) said certain things and I'm not going to say that on the television because I think they are things you shouldn't say.

"He said certain things of a racist nature and I took it badly. As you see, I signalled to the referee that he had said certain things. I told the referee what he had said.

"At first the referee told me to get back in position. When he said that, I said no. There are things that you can let pass. But I'm a man and a man of colour.

"We are in 2017 (sic) and there are things that we don't let pass anymore. I reported it to the referee and I hope there is a punishment.

"He said something in reference to my colour. You see very clearly he pinched his nose in relation to what he said.

"I asked him to repeat it. I think at the moment he repeated it he realised what he had said.

"He wanted to limit the damage. I said no. I made it known what he had said was racist and I wouldn't let it pass.

"I called to the ref and said what he had said and the gesture.

"At the end he wanted to say, 'No, I didn't say that' but I said 'You don’t say that to a human being and to a black man'.

"It would be incomprehensible coming from a fan but from a footballer who earns a very good living and is there to entertain, it should be punished."
