ALBION are investigating allegations of racial abuse against Gaetan Bong by Burnley fans.

They are looking into claims the defender was subjected to monkey chants during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Turf Moor.

Albion boss Chris Hughton branded the behaviour of Burnley supporters as “shameful” after Bong was booed throughout the match.

Jay Rodriguez, the West Brom striker accused by Bong of a racist remark during the Premier League game against the Seagulls at the Hawthorns in January, was born in Burnley and played for them for five years.

An independent commission found the case not proven after the FA charged Rodriguez over the incident with Bong.

The FA were “completely satisfied” Bong made the complaint in “absolute good faith”.

Albion officials became aware following the Burnley match of the allegations of racial abuse.

Two different supporters rang talkSPORT and BBC Five Live radio phone-ins.

They claimed Bong was the target of monkey chants as he went to take a throw-in during the second half. One of the fans is understood to have contacted Kick It Out, the anti-discrimination organisation.

Albion have sought the assistance of Sussex Police in investigating the matter.

Hughton spoke out against the persistent booing of Bong during the game.

“He hasn’t had that anywhere else, so we’re angry and surprised,” Hughton said. “I thought it was shameful and I was very surprised.

“Gaetan is a very good individual who went about it (complaint against Rodriguez) in exactly the right way, as was stated by the FA and the committee as well in their two statements. They spoke very well of Gaetan.”

Bong received support from team-mate Glenn Murray after the Burnley match.

Murray said: “I know Jay Rodriguez is a Burnley boy. I don’t think it’s very fair, I don’t think it’s just that he (Bong) is getting booed for something that he believes is true.

“Who is to question Gaetan? No one else heard it. I don’t think he would have any reason to make it up.”
