Albion boss Chris Hughton has welcomed the FA’s stance on the Burnley boos for Gaetan Bong.

The FA said the behaviour of some Burnley fans towards Bong was “unacceptable” after the defender was targeted in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Turf Moor.

Their statement followed Hughton branding the persistent booing of Bong as “shameful”.

The Cameroon left-back came under fire from Burnley fans for accusing West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez of a racist remark at the Hawthorns in January.

Rodriguez was charged by the FA and an independent commission found the case not proven, while emphasising the complaint had been made by Bong entirely in good faith.

Hughton said: “The FA has been excellent right through the process that we went through. Our communication with them has been excellent.

“He (Bong) is a very strong character and that was shown by his performance at the weekend.

“We have gone through a fairly long process with Gaetan and certainly what he wants to do now is very much get on with playing football.”

Albion host Manchester United tomorrow night, knowing victory will see them safe in the Premier League.

Hughton said: “All of my thoughts and efforts are very much into the next game because, at the moment, getting points against United is the most important thing.”

Albion have taken two points from 18 since beating Arsenal at the Amex in March, including a home defeat by Leicester and draw with Huddersfield.

“It is frustrating because we have been in a similar position for a while now and we have had opportunities,” Hughton said.

“We are, however, on the back of a couple of decent points at home to Tottenham and away to Burnley.

“What it has done is keep everybody on their toes and our attitude has to be that we still need points to make sure we stay up.”
