LUKE WELLS admitted he was delighted to make the most of his chance after taking a starring role as Sussex get their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign off to a winning start against Kent at Hove.

Playing only his seventh game in the competition and first for nearly two years, Wells took 2-30 with his leg-spin as Kent were dismissed for an under-par 188.

And he then smacked an 89-ball 62 - his highest score in the competition - as Sussex eased to a seven-wicket win with 10.1 overs to spare.

Wells said: “I’m very pleased to get an opportunity - and take it. My white-ball career has been an enigma.

“I haven’t really taken an opportunity I’ve been given and when I have had a chance, it’s been maybe one or two games.

“Jason Gillespie said I was going to be in for a couple of games, so don’t worry too much, and that allowed me to relax. It was nice to get into the game with the ball, which helped me relax with the bat later.”
