Laura Rafferty will take two pluses from Albion Women’s heaviest defeat of the season.

One is that they never gave up or stopped trying to play their football.

The other is that they now have a great chance to do what they did after defeat by London Bees a few weeks ago, which is make up for it with a prestigious home win.

Albion are assured of runners-up spot in WSL2 as they prepare to finish their season against third-placed Millwall Lionesses at Culver Road tomorrow (2pm).

They have yet to drop a home point in their debut season at this level.

That is a proud record after going unbeaten on their own turf and 3G in the Spring Series last year.

Now comes the chance to go out in style, helped perhaps by the jolt of that 4-0 reverse at fourth-placed Durham.

Centre-back Rafferty said: “It will be a tough game against one of the best sides in the league.

“We have assured second place and we want to go out in style.

“Credit to Durham We weren’t good enough up there.

“But Millwall coming up is a good game to make up for it.

“We have a week’s training and time to look forward to it in a positive way.

“That’s what we are doing – looking forward and putting that one behind us.

“The fact we already have second place doesn’t mean anything. We want to get top results.

“We want to get as many points as we can and we want to make the club and the staff proud.”

Albion followed that defeat to Bees by beating Doncaster Belles 1-0.

Belles have won the title going into the final round with 44 points while Albion have 37, Millwall 33 and Durham 32.

The great thing for Rafferty is she reckons Albion are still a work in progress, despite surpassing many people’s pre-season expectations.

She said: “We know there is a lot more to come from us.

“We have been disappointed not to get wins in some games.

“Durham was disappointing but the great thing was we still showed our character.

“We didn’t give up for one second. We were fighting all the way.

“They scored quite early but we carried on with our gameplan. We played our football.”

Rafferty, who does a lot of work for Albion In The Community, does not yet know whether she will be around for the move into the top-flight next season.

She said: “I hope to find out soon. I love this club. On and off the pitch I have had a massive role.”
