Tom Haines and Phil Salt each scored maiden Championship centuries in a record second-wicket partnership for Sussex against Durham at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground.
The morning clouds made way for afternoon sunshine as the pair celebrated beating the previous record stand of 196 between Bill Athey and Alan Wells at Hove in 1996.
They helped Sussex reach 279-2 at tea and went past the record second wicket stand for matches between these counties, of 231 between Michael DiVenito and Will Smith – who is playing in this match – at Chester-le-Street in 2009.
The stand had reached 244 in 54 overs when Hains was caught at slip by Paul Collingwood off the bowling of Cameron Steel, the seventh Durham bowler to be employed before tea.
A single to square-leg gave Salt his hundred in 169 minutes, off 125 balls, with 15 fours and a hooked six over midwicket off Matt Salisbury.
Haines reached three figures with a leg-glance for four off Nathan Rimmington. His century occupied 164 minutes and 120 deliveries, with 18 fours.
