Jason Gillespie has revealed he asked Twenty20 king Rashid Khan to play Championship cricket for Sussex.

But the star Afghanistan spinner will not be in action when they resume their four-day campaign away to Gloucestershire tomorrow.

Chris Jordan is set for his first Specsavers County Championship outing of the season after commitments in the IPL and for England.

Tom Haines, who made his maiden first-class century in the most recent Championship fixture against Durham as a late call-up for Jordan, is ruled out.

Any thoughts of bringing in the in-form limited overs run-maker Laurie Evans have been dashed by a hamstring problem.

And Khan, who was hired for the Vitality Blast, will also be elsewhere as Sussex walk out at Cheltenham.

Head coach Gillespie said: “Don’t worry, I’ve been asking him!

“I think you will find he will take little bit of a break and he will be back for the Blast.

“We have posed a question as to whether that (Championship cricket) is something he would be interested in.

“I think he already had some plans to do other things.

“Don’t rule it out but probably very unlikely.”

Gillespie has named a 13-man squad but Haines is recovering from a head impact sustained in training and has not been considered.

Evans hurt his left hamstring during Friday’s Vitality Blast defeat to Surrey.

Sussex: from Wells, Salt, Finch, Wright, Brown, Rawlins, Burgess, Wiese, Jordan, Archer, Robinson, Briggs, Beer.
