Phil Salt hit a rapid 50 for Sussex today.

But Gloucestershire seamer Craig Miles claimed three wickets to thwart a confident Sussex start on the opening morning of the Specsavers County Championship match at Cheltenham.

The visitors looked to be taking control after winning the toss when Salt and Luke Wells put together an opening stand of 74 in 20 overs.

But when Wells, on 17, got a leading edge to Miles and was well caught by Graeme van Buuren at mid-wicket, running towards the fence, it signalled a dramatic change of fortunes.

Salt was yorked by Miles for 57, having reached a 45-ball half-century, with 8 fours and a six, and the tall pace bowler notched a third victim as Luke Wright was snapped up by the diving James Bracey at mid-wicket for nine.

When Michael Burgess fell lbw to Kieran Noema-Barnett for two in the 28th over Sussex had lost four wickets for 23 runs. They went in to lunch on 125-4 from 31 overs.
