Sussex batsmen built a solid platform after winning the toss against Glamorgan in their day-night Specsavers County Championship Division Two fixture at Hove.
Openers Luke Wells and Phil Salt put on 73 for the first wicket.
Salt, who hit eight fours in a sprightly, 52-ball 48, was out to a fine delivery from Michael Hogan, which straightened and lifted to have him caught behind in the 19th over.
At lunch the more restrained Wells had scored 48 from 98 deliveries.
His partner, Tom Haines, was unbeaten on 18. Haines is playing in place of the rested Luke Wright.
It is his first championship game since scoring a century on debut against Durham at Arundel last month.
Hogan and Jeremy Lawlor were the pick of the bowlers for bottom of the table Glamorgan.
