Tymal Mills believes Sussex have their best Twenty20 line-up in his time at the club.

Now he has challenged their all-star attack to go out and win games in the Vitality Blast.

Mills could be back in action under the Hove lights for the first time in very nearly a year when South Group leaders Gloucestershire visit tonight (7pm).

He has recovered from a torn quad and was part of the abortive fixture at Kent on Friday.

Whether he would have faced Hampshire on Sunday had it not rained we might never know. And that underlines the point he was making.

Though fit and firing, Mills is not an automatic choice to go steaming in from the Cromwell Road End tonight – especially with a burst of three games in five days to come.

And that has to be great news for the Sharks.

Mills told The Argus: “The boys started really well with three wins.

“If Jof (fast bowler Jofra Archer) was eligible I am sure we would have six international bowlers in our attack.

“It’s a good attack on paper but that’s all it is. We have still got to go out there and perform.

“We back ourselves. This is my fourth year here and it is our strongest side in that time.

“We have just got to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win games as a bowling attack.

“We have to put the onus on ourselves in this particular competition.”

Archer could be cleared for England action next year.

That would open the door for him to emulate Mills, Chris Jordan, David Wiese, Rashid Khan and Danny Briggs in gaining international honours.

While Ollie Robinson has been the odd one out in that respect, he is very much an equal part of their bowling options.

Robinson has been dependable in all formats this year and was unlucky to miss out when Mills returned at Canterbury.

Mills has been taking things carefully since tearing his quad playing for the World XI at Lord’s and then suffering a more minor setback back at Hove.

As a T20 specialist he has a limited window of opportunity in which to shine so tonight will be a big night should he get the nod.

He said: “It was good to get back the other night. I was a little rusty having not played much.

“I got through a second team game the previous Monday at Gloucester and played a practice game here on the Wednesday.

“But I’m feeling good so it’s just a matter of getting game time in the legs now and just enjoying being back with the boys.

“I’d actually torn the quad quite badly. It was a 12cm tear and I got back bowling again and tweaked it again trying to come back for the first game.

“It then ended up as a longer period out.

“Hopefully I just miss those four games and that will be it now.”

It is more than two years now since Mills lit up a ridiculously cold night at Hove by blasting out Chris Gayle.

Hove regulars last saw him as Sharks made a late push for qualification last year.

He took 3-20 off four overs, with scalps including the big two of Aaron Finch and Jason Roy, to help Sussex cruise past Surrey with eight wickets and 39 balls to spare.

Gillespie has named the 14-man squad from which he would have sent out a side against Hampshire had the forecasters, who predicted rain, not been proved spot-on.

The Sharks boss said: “We thought over at Canterbury the most effective bowling line-up for us included Tymal.

“Tymal has had a bit of a lay-off but he will be in and around our squad and we decide what the most effective XI is on the day.

“We saw that Ollie Robinson missed out against Kent.

“Had we played here on Sunday, then we might have had a different line-up from Canterbury.

“You don’t like to chop and change too much “I certainly don’t like to chop and change teams very much.

“But, if we feel that someone can be more effective on that surface and against that opposition, we will go that way.”
