Albion are in a fight with Fulham and Spanish clubs to sign Valencia defender Martin Montoya.

The Argus revealed earlier today the Seagulls' intention to sign another defender as well as Wigan centre-half Dan Burn.

The player targeted is right-back Montoya.

The 27-year-old would add to the 17 non-homegrown players currently given squad numbers by Chris Hughton.

That is the maximum number permitted in the Premier League squad, so one would have to make way for Montoya.

He played 67 games in five seasons at Barcelona as second-choice to Dani Alves before loan spells at Inter and Real Betis and a move two years ago to Valencia.
