Boss Chris Hughton admitted Albion's performance was nowhere near enough to get a result at Watford.

Two goals by Argentinian left-winger Roberto Pereyra condemned the lacklustre Seagulls to a convincing defeat on the opening day of the Premier League season at Vicarage Road.

Hughton said: "I've got no complaints with the result. We lost out in most departments.

"We never had anywhere near enough of an effect on the game which allows you to get a result away from home.

"No excuses. We have a system that we play and the players that played know the system very well."

Bernardo was the only new signing to start. He moved from left-back to right-back after Albion lost veteran skipper Bruno (below) to injury midway through the first half.

The Argus: "He felt his hamstring," Hughton said. "As with all muscle injuries you don't really know the extent."

Bruno is an early doubt for Manchester United's visit to the Amex on Sunday week.

Watford captain Troy Deeney was delighted with the result and his team's display. He said: "We had a great start, got fans behind us early with our pressing which is what we aimed to do. To get the goals and Maxi (Pereyra) having a tough year to put the work in nice to get the goals, two well-taken goals too.

"He's not a bad player, he played in the Champions League final (for Juventus). People think we would fall apart because Richarlison left (for Everton), this is a great squad. We've got Nathaniel Chalobah and Gerard Deulofeu to come back.

"We had a great pre-season and it showed with our fitness towards the end, so long may that continue. The gaffer has to take credit for that."
