Ex-Albion boss Gus Poyet has been suspended by his latest club Bordeaux after a furious post-match press conference.

Poyet accused his bosses of selling key striker Gaetan Laborde behind his back in the run-up to last night’s Europa League tie with Mariupol.

But in turn his club president felt Poyet thought himself more powerful than was actually the case.

The episode will bring back bad memories for Albion fans of the bitter summer of 2013 which led to Poyet leaving their club.

In a post-match press conference dominated by the issue, Poyet told reporters: “It’s the worst day of my time with the club. It’s shameful what they have done against me, against the supporters and I can’t accept it.”

Poyet was summoned to the club’s headquarters at the impressive Chateau de Haillan first thing this morning as things came to a head. His suspension was confirmed soon afterwards.

Club president Stephane Martin criticised Poyet’s behaviour over the last two months.

Martin said: “He thought he was the owner of the club. That's not the case. Maybe one day the head coach will be the owner of the club but it won’t be with me.”

He added: "I confirm that Gus Poyet has been suspended for one week pending a preliminary interview with a view to possible dismissal next Friday. This is the procedure. We are in a week where the parties can trade and get closer, as in any business.Technically, anything is possible."

Poyet has now managed five clubs in five different countries since leaving the Amex – Sunderland, Real Betis, Olympiacos, Shanghai Shenhua and Bordeaux.

He is remembered by Albion fans for the controversial post-match exchange with Argus reporter Andy Naylor in the wake of the 2013 play-off semi-final in which he questioned the club’s potential and ambition.

It proved to be his final public act as Albion manager.

He is also remembered as the man who guided Albion into the Amex as League One champions and brought Lewis Dunk through to the senior side as well as signing Bruno on a free transfer.
